But then she learns that Henry is in fact the Fourth Earl of Berwick, a notorious rake from a dark and dissolute family. He is rumoured to deal with smugglers, and his ancestry riddled with incest, insanity and murder. Beth’s father forbids her from seeing him again.

However, Beth refuses to believe that Henry is as bad as his forebears, and starts seeing him in secret. When her father finds out he gives her such a beating, that she feels her only choice is to elope with Henry to his forbidding castle in Northumberland – the same bleak fortress where his family committed their loathsome deeds…

Curse of the Kingsmans reminded me of the gothic romances I read when I was a young teenager. That being said, I was somewhat disappointed in it. I am now much older than a young teen, and I suppose I expected more substance to the story. Although the story of Beth and her family traveling to London in search of a husband had some fine moments, I found it disturbing that the problem of Beth's abusive father was so easily dismissed. The story had all the components of a good book - the romance, the mystery, the old castle, and the dark and stormy nights. I liked how Beth's character developed from shy and naive to outspoken and assertive, and I thought many of the characters were interesting and unique. I would say Curse of the Kinsgmans is a good, quick, simple and enjoyable read, as long as it's not taken too seriously. What I liked about it was that it reminded me why I developed a love of mysteries as a young reader; what I didn't like about it was that I felt like I was reading the same book I read "way back when" I was a kid.

Curse of the Kingsmans edition by Ethan Somerville Emma Daniels Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really enjoyed the flow & unexpected turns this one took. O the things adventurous, young, foolish, girls can get themselves into & out of! I look forward to reading the sequels.
Tales of olde England, kings & court, pride going before the fall; history, mystery, love...true love & intrigue all in a well written novel? Or non-fiction...;
The 18 year old Beth Darney falls in love with Henry, the 4th Earl of Berwick. His family name is cursed. Beth's father is a tyrant and he did not want her to get involve with Henry. Beth secretly sneaks out meeting Henry. Beth's father discovers that and gives her a hiding. Beth and Henry eloped. I would recommend this book to romance readers.
A little cutesy at first, but full of suspense and interesting characters. Definitely worth a try if you love suspense.
I would recommend this story to all who like historical pieces and romance. I choose this heading because the unfortunate events in both main characters lives were turned for good. I liked the way forgiveness was stressed in the plot and that we are all important not just the well off.
This was a good story with some very good characters. What continually annoyed me was that it all felt hurried; as if the author wanted to get to a certain scene. The main characters fell in love after one meeting, the heroine was condemned by her family nearly overnight, smugglers were found, and everyone had a quick and perfect happily ever after while having tea.

This had the distinct taste of someone writing fanfiction just to get to the good parts.
I like period novels with some romance and Curse of the Kingsmans fiits that bill. I want to clear here, this is not a great novel by any stretch. There are some period anomalies and the usual typos common in independent books, but the story itself is quite good. This feels like a first novel to me and it is the first in a series. I like that the author has this as a free offering so that readers can have a chance to see if they want to continue with the series without investing a lot of money. I think more authors should emulate this policy. I have purchased the next two books, in fact I bought the set of three in one volume, and I think this series is worth a look.
This isn't the typical historical romance but that's one thread of many woven through this book. It's a dark tale that was almost too much for me but I was rewarded for not giving up on the book with a revealing and happy ending. Intrigue into who is doing what and the deeper stories into the characters will make mystery lovers enjoy this book.
Enjoy
